"Drug of Choice"

I read Beautiful Boy and then Tweak and found both books to be written amazingly honest.
We tend to hear the term "drug of choice" frequently when discussing addiction, and I was shocked that Nic spoke so candidly of all the various drugs he used.
I am curious as to whether this is common in addicts.
I am the mother of a 19 year old who went to residential addiction treatment 3 different times before his 18th birthday. He also spet 10 days in a psychiatric unit in a hospital for evaluation because he overdosed 4 times in 2 years.
He is clean right now, and I pray he can stay clean.
